MILOS

Milos, Greece – off the beaten path Greek island and only a 25 minute flight from Athens. Lured in by Sarakiniko, we came to explore the moonscape beach.

Our Stay

4 days / 4 nights

STAY – we loved our Airbnb in Plaka! We opted for this smaller, picturesque village to embrace going remote and getting some rest. You can walk through the whole area in about 10-15 minutes. While there are a few bars and restaurants open late, its nice and quiet . There is very limited car access, so keep in mind while booking accommodations. Our Airbnb came with a parking spot for our buggy.

If you are arriving by ferry, you’ll arrive in the port of Adamas. It’s a bit more lively with shops, cafes, hotels, and restaurants which makes it more practical, but less charming in my opinion.

DO

First things first, rent a 4 wheeler or buggy. Check out Moto Cristos. There aren’t many paved roads, so expect to go “off road” to access beaches. In high season it’s worth reserving in advance, but we visited in September and had no issues walking up. Buggy rentals will run ~100 euros per day or less if paying with cash.

Venetian Castle – get there early for sunset! This 13th century fortress is a 5 minute walk from central Plaka.

EXPLORE THE BEACHES

Sarakiniko Beach – known for the grayish white volcanic rock landscape, sculpted into a “moon beach” by the wind. There’s a small patch of sandy beach, but the real draw is the cliff jumping into crystal clear waters. The winds were WAY too strong (30 MPH) when we visited so it wasn’t the typical experience. Best to arrive at 7AM at sunrise for uninterrupted photos, but worth visiting again for midday play.

Firiplaka Beach – if you plan to spend all day here, you can rent loungers for 20 euros each and enjoy the casual beach bar. Since we were popping around the island, we brought a backpack with towels, beer, and snacks. There’s a narrow stretch of beach with a huge rock formation near the shore -one of my favorites.

Tsigrado Beach (off beaten path) – you’ll need to climb down (a not so stable) ladder to access this beach. A unique experience, but the beach area isn’t very large so it can get crowded.

Firopotamos – small, peaceful, fishing village we stopped to explore before heading to lunch at Medusa

Plathiena Beach – northwest of Plaka. This bay is surrounded by rocks and protects against strong winds, keeping the waters calm. Wide sandy beach with chairs for hire and a beach bar- I could have stayed here all day!

Paleochori Beach – didn’t get a chance to visit, but if you do add the nearby Sirocco volcanic restaurant to the list.

Papafragas Caves – concealed swimming hole among volcanic rocks. Although, I wouldn’t advise swimming as it seems quite dangerous. Nice spot to stop and explore.

GO SAILING

Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to Poliegos and Kleftiko – Smallish group (15 pax) sail to the Blue Bay of Poliegos and “Pirate Beach” of Kleftiko which is only accessible by boat. We reserved this excursion with Milos Adventures via Get Your Guide. Highlight of the trip!

SHOPPING

Θerws – high quality, local designer boutique at reasonable prices

Aelia Boutique Milos – Greek designers, great resort wear

EAT

Empourios Tavern – Best meal in Milos, authentic greek and remote! It’s about a 30 minute drive from Plaka, but 100% worth the trek for traditional dishes like goat and potatoes and the most delicious dessert. Another highly rated option just outside of Adamas is O! Hamos! Tavern.

Medusa – tavern with beautiful views, fresh seafood, and friendly cats. Look for the swordfish souvlaki!

Vlahos – great souvlaki in Plaka! En Plo is a coffee shop and breakfast spot just upstairs.

Avil-Milos – small plates in Plaka

DOM – breakfast spot towards the port with loaded fruit pancakes, big enough to share.

Now to catch the ferry to Paros!
